ROLE SUMMARY
The Lactation Educator/Counselor is a RN with a CLE / CLC or IBLC certification who ensures continuity of care for the mo! ther who initiates breast feeding. The Lactation Educator/Counselor is responsible for coordinating all breast feeding activities in multiple settings. The Lactation Educator/Counselor utilizes independent nursing judgment when integrating breast feeding across the continuum (inpatient and outpatient). The Lactation Educator/Counselor has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate age related patient care protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Is responsible for monitoring communication and teamwork to ensure the best possible outcomes for the breast feeding mothers. In collaboration with Medical staff and the CNS , the CLE / CLC will assist in developing protocols for assessment and treatments for breast feeding problems.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Coordinates development, implementation, monitoring and modifying of an individual's plan of care for breast feeding, both inpatient and outpat! ient. Assures high risk individuals/populations have the oppor! tunity to breast feed. Daily assessment of all low and moderate risk breastfeeding couplets, viewing at least one feeding, and assisting with education and advice on difficulties. Rounding and education provided to ensure informed decision making regarding breast feeding to all bottle feeding couplets. Collaborates with the pediatrician to ensure that the CRMC Lactation Program meets their objectives, developing protocols and treatments for breastfeeding moms.

Monitors compliance with/adherence to breast feeding protocols by tracking and reporting of positive and negative variances (patient comments). Evaluate outpatient consults for history, feeding, and weight evaluation. Promotes breast feeding beyond the first few weeks of life and assists mothers to reach their own goals for breast feeding. Promote "Warm Line" calls from parents, making referrals as necessary. Conduct "Tender Care" follow-up, implementation and participate in periodic review of program.
Coordinates and participates in surveying community entities regarding their perceived need for assistance and resources that a lactation Educator/Counselor could provide. Assists with educational programs on breastfeeding to the community and hospital staff. Serves as a speaker/participant in public and professional forums to provide programs relating to lactation and breastfeeding. Offers regular scheduled breastfeeding classes to inform prospective mothers of the services available.

Practice according to the latest evidence based research and offer ongoing support to staff with focus on competence and confidence working with breastfeeding couplets. Develop and utilize a communication tool to facilitate information sharing between CLC , Nurse Manager and staff. Ensures that lactation principals are integrated within the Mother/Baby Unit.

In-depth knowledge about JCAHO guidelines, rules and regulations. Employee will support and participate in relation! ship based care model. Employee will support shared governance and part! icipate when appropriate. Mandatory education and contact education requirements.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with administration, physicians, Case Manages, Social Workers, patients, patient's family and staff so as to promote positive patient care.
  • Ability to coordinate and evaluate lactation requirements related to patient's condition, formulate plan of care, select appropriate interventions, evaluate patient's response to plan of care and to explain to patient/family about this process.
  • Ability to adapt to flexible work routine/schedule.
  • Basic computer skills desirable.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • RN from an accredited School of Nursing . Certified Lactation (IBLC) Consultant, Lactation Educator ( CLE ), or Certified Lactation Counselor ( CLC )
  • Licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Wyoming .
  • Preferred five! (5) years experience in nursing, two (2) years experience in the area of Mother/Baby.
