Role
As a member of the Emergency Medical Services team, the ER Paramedic provides direct and indirect patient care th! rough protocols set by Wyoming Medical Center to maintain safe and effective patient flow in the Emergency Room. The ER Paramedic works under the supervision of the ER Charge Nurse and the medical direction of the ER physician, and is accountable for providing care within established standards of practice. The ER Paramedic maintains required certifications and skills by participating in continuing education, practical skills testing, and the re-certification processes set by the state of Wyoming and WMC. Education and Experience Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and at least six months of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Current Wyoming Emergency Medical Services Paramedic certification/licensure is required. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACL! S) is required within 12 months of hire. AHA Pediatric Advance! d Life Support (PALS) or American Academy of Pediatrics Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) is required within 12 months of hire. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The employee shall comply with all safety and health standards, and all rules, regulations, and orders which are applicable to the individual’s own position, actions, and conduct. Performs duties and responsibilities within the scope of a Paramedic as defined by the Wyoming Office of Emergency Medical Services and Wyoming Medical Center policies and procedures. Receives and carries out orders from the Emergency Room physician within scope of practice, and performs closed-loop communication with Emergency Room Registered Nurse. Collaborates within the Emergency Room team (Unit Clerks, Care Technicians/Certified Nursing Assistants, Registered Nurses, Emergency Room Technicians) to deliver safe and efficient patient care. Acts as a liaison between the Emergency Room team and the patient/fa! mily, communicating frequently with patient/family to update information related to the patient’s condition, status, progress, etc. In performing all duties and responsibilities, serves as a model for service excellence and patient satisfaction in the Emergency Room. Stabilizes and extricates injured patients from vehicles at the Emergency Room entrance. Initiates life-saving measures, e.g. opening an airway, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, stabilization of fractures, cervical spine alignment/protections. Assists patients to and from vehicles and the Emergency Room. Directs patient flow in the triage and reception areas of the Emergency Room. Communicates the condition of the patients presenting to the Emergency Room to the triage nurse. Transports patients from triage to the Emergency Room treatment area at the request of the triage nurse. Performs other patient transfers/transports as requested. Initiates patient data to the Emergency Room tracking board. Respon! ds to patient call lights. Performs application of splints, staple and ! suture removal, EKGs, oxygen administration, automated electronic defibrillation (AED), venipuncture, and fluid intake and output (I&O) monitoring/documenting. Assists with interventions/actions including but not limited to gastric lavage, cervical spine immobilization, dressing change/wound care, hypo- or hyperthermia care, etc. Performs order entry and procedural set-up. Stocks rooms. Utilizes alternatives to restraints or applies restraints in compliance with WMC policies and practices. Promptly reads and utilizes communication materials, especially emails directed to #ER. Reports occurrences promptly and fully, and according to risk management guidelines. Maintains quality assurance standards according to regulatory guidelines of The Joint Commission, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and/or other applicable agencies. Performs light housekeeping and environmental safety checks. Performs additional duties as required or assigned.
